Become an Advocate

What we’re looking for:

Our mission is to spotlight Gospel-centered reformers and their initiatives through journalism and creative media. Nations advocates for individuals—the underserved, overlooked warriors—not causes, current issues, or organizations. Stories should flow from an individual’s journey instead of an organization’s program.

We seek contributing artists who elevate stories of hope, are concerned with injustice across borders and cultures, and use their gifts to advocate for others with dignity and compassion.

Our audience is a network of creatives, advocates, travelers, and justice-seekers.

Guidelines for Writers:

We try to reach for the fresh word or phrase over the easy one. In general, well-worn words—brokenness, equip, unique, etc.—should be replaced.

In the same vein, we avoid church lingo/jargon so as not to alienate readers and to uphold the highest standards for our content.

We do not take political stances. Rather, we let an individual’s story of transformation speak for itself.

Nations Journal and blog are not focused on current events; we emphasize advocacy over journalism and seek stories that stand the test of time.

We draw inspiration from National Geographic and Vice News. Storytelling should be visceral, evocative, thoroughly researched, accurate, and hopeful. It should point back to the Gospel’s transformative power in our world, and the way God is using ordinary individuals to do extraordinary things. Write with humility, with excellence, and with hope.

Writers will contribute to Nations’ blog, with the possibility of traveling on story collecting trips for the print volume. To apply, send two writing samples and a link to your website/portfolio.

Guidelines for Photographers:

We’re looking for portraits, cityscapes, and landscapes. We want travel shots and photos that tell a narrative. The grittier, the better. These photos will accompany written content dealing with spiritual formation, advocacy, and social justice. We highlight individuals who are reforming the world and we discuss how to live as Gospel-centered reformers in our own culture.

Photographers will contribute to Nations’ blog and social media platforms, with the possibility of traveling on story collecting trips for the print volume. To apply, send us 5-10 of your best shots. (Here are a few examples of post/photo combinations.)
